In loving memory of Bob, the Labrador

On Christmas Day in 2005, I was alone with my yellow Labrador named Bob. I was feeling sorry for myself as I was facing bankruptcy and my wife had left me. Amidst all this sadness, I noticed Bob’s unwavering and unconditional love for me. I realized that my misery should not affect Bob’s happiness.

So, I decided to take Bob to Hornsea, a beach on the east coast of Yorkshire that was about 25 to 30 miles away. The weather was cold and windy, but Bob’s joy and excitement were not affected by it. He loved chasing his ball far into the sea, and his enthusiasm never waned.

Upon reaching the sandy beach, Bob didn’t hesitate and immediately ran towards the sea. I was engrossed in throwing his ball, watching him fetch it with unwavering enthusiasm. The sea was whipped into a froth by the wind and presented a captivating scene. I thought to myself that the natural beauty would make for a stunning photograph.

So, I positioned myself on the beach, crouched and waiting for the perfect wave, camera in hand. It was a digital SLR, ready to capture the moment. I was so focused on the approaching wave that I didn’t notice the water creeping up my ankles, soaking me completely. The cold water drenched me, and I realized my predicament. Looking up, I saw Bob at a distance, seemingly questioning my actions.

It wasn’t until later, when I connected my camera to my PC, that I discovered an incredible shot I had captured. This image that would eventually grace the front cover of my book, “Never Give Up.” That day was a pivotal moment for me, symbolizing the importance of lifting ourselves up, even if it’s initially for the sake of those we love, whether it is a person or a pet like Bob.

Reflecting on that day, I realize it was a turning point, a testament to the power of resilience, and the unexpected gifts of moments spent with those who offer us unconditional love. In loving memory of Bob, the Labrador, I cherish the lessons and turning points he inspired in my life.
